NDT cables is the sister company of Matrix electronics, it is a e-commerce site where NDT engineers can purchase replacement probe leads also known as NDT inspection cables or transducer cables the NDT cables can be either single or twin depending on the transducer being used.
The cables are terminated with various connectors including BNC, SMC, lemo 00 and lemo 01 but others are available, the connectors are determined by the mating part on the probe.
Matrix electronics was set up to provide a professional quality service within the electronics industry, the word soon got around and through recommendations a regular customer base was formed. A few of these where within the NDT industry including NDT inspection and NDT manufacture. Matrix soon realised that by setting up NDT cables they could further enhance the service to there customers.

NDT Cables
Our new company NDT Cables is now live. The website is not quite finished but up and running, and it is already proving itself as we have had our first enquiry which turned to a sale of 10 X SMC connector to lemo 00 connectors 2 meter NDT test leads.
All of the ultrasonic test leads we are going to stock have had one of each manufactured which include BNC to lemo 00, BNC to SMC, BNC to lemo 01, and SMC to lemo 00 so that they can all be photographed for the website, all of the ultrasonic test cables come in both single NDT cable and twin NDT cable.
Im really pleased with all of the connectors we ordered they are all good quality and really nice to work with , as is the RG174 coaxial cable. We ordered boots for only the lemo connectors but have since changed our minds to have boots on all connectors as they look so much better and give a quality look to a quality product.
Its a very exciting time for all of us at matrix electronics and we all just hope our businesses continue to go from strength to strength.

so busy
its been all go here at matrix electronics, a couple of big potential orders in the pipe line, one of which would be alot of PCB assembly work, and the next would be mainly electro-mechanical assembly, this is why its so varied and interesting being a electronic sub-contractor.
We have been really busy building cables for the NDT industry, some of which have been probe leads or transducer cables which can terminate in lemo, BNC, subvis (smc),connectors. umbillical cables are also something we specialise in running them up-to 50 meters long or more with numerous amounts of cables and terminations.
We will be starting a new job tomorrow which will involve SMT PCB assembly although PTH PCB assembly is something we are quite often asked to do.
The most exciting thing has been the launch of a sister company NDT cables the web-site has been launched and the stock for assembling all of the products has been ordered, so i would like to take this opportunity in wishing NDT cables good luck for all future business.

coming together
After the success of matrix electronics NDT Cables is about to go live, there has been alot of discussion about the website and to what it should contain, we wanted umbillical cables, to be advertised but because these would be to the customers own specification it was difficult, so we left these as an option where the customer could phone up to speak to a representative about their requirements.
Any standard probe leads also known as transducer cables can be ordered on-line in any length with numerous connectors to choose from, including Lemo, BNC, and subvis. All standard probe leads are manufactured using RG174 coax cable, but other cable of the customers choice can be used.
Aswell as offering a full replacement cable service to the NDT industry all to ISO9001 standards, NDT cables sister company matrix electronics can provide a full electro-mechanical assembly service, and PCB assembly service.

NDT cables
NDT Cables is a sister company to matrix electronics, it will be officially launched next monday 02.07.2012. It will be an e-commerce site selling high quality replacement transducer cables to the NDT industry manufactured to ISO9001 quality standards.
NDT Cables is being set up because of the success of matrix electronics, it soon gained a strong reliable customer base, who suggested that a service of this nature would be invaluable to there needs. The research as to exactly what the customers both need and expect in terms of specification and quality has been second to none, suppliers who provide high quality parts have been sourced, skilled and experienced assemblers interviewed.
So the count down is on until the e-commerce site goes live. I would like to take this opportunity to wish NDT Cables a very prosperous future and to hopefully be as succesfull as its sister company Matrix electronics.

ultrasonic testing
non-destructive testing has been around for more than forty years, this is a method of detecting internal flaws of various materials using ultrasonic waves. The use of ultrasonic oscillations to detect internal flaws has become a popular test method, giving results to small tolerances time after time. The principle of ultrasonics is based on the fact that solid materials are good at conducting sound waves, the smaller the wave length is the stronger the interaction effect on the material being tested. The ultrasonic test method is both economical and non-risk, in industries where the safety requirements are higher eg. nuclear and aerospace, radiography and ultrasonic methods would both be used.

PCB Assembly
electronic components are kitted in stores then they are pre-formed to fit the positions in the PCB, resistors and diodes are usually first to be fitted, paying attention to the coloured bands on the body on the resistor which indicate the value, and ensuring the diodes are inserted with the correct orientation as these have a anode and a cathode.
Intergrated circuits (IC) are usually fitted next ensuring pin 1 is in the correct position, capacitors are usually next paying attention to the positive and negative, the positive leg is usually longer in length and a small cross is printed on the body. Electronic components are fitted into the pcb in this way in height order

ULTRASONICS
Ultrasonic testing is often performed on steel and other types of metal, other materials can be tested but less successfully. Non-destructive testing is used within many industries that include transporation, automotive, and nuclear.
Ultrasonic testing is useful for monitoring pipework corrosion, as the thickness can be monitored without any effect on equipment or anything sited near-by. A couplant is used to pass a transducer over the area to be inspected and short ultrasonic pulse waves are sent into the test piece.
Some transducers can recieve aswell as send the pulse waves, while some will just send the pulse waves and a seperate reciever will be used. The arrival time of the pulse is used to reveal imperfections or flaws

Umbilical Cable assembly
Umbilical cable assembly's or multicore cable harness consist of any number of cables and other services, including Ultrasonics, motors, encoders, pneumatic, cameras and lighting.
The cable assembly can vary in length and construction, but usually will form a bundle that is then covered in a type of expandable sleeving, heatshrink or a combination of both.
Connectors multi pin or coaxial of crimp or solder type and fittings for various services are fitted to either end.
Depending on the Mechanical Assembly device or Manipulator configuration it can also be interfaced via a PCB assembly contained in a junction box.
A majority of these systems are used in a harsh enviroment so cable assemblies and the type of material used is very important, so any PCB assembly sub-contractors or Cable assembly sub-contractors procurment and QA systems need to be vetted.

cable assembly
when manufacturing a cable assembly also known as a wiring harness, the cables and wires are cut to length this can vary from a few centimetres to many meters. Markers are placed on the cables for identification purposes, the ends of the wires are stripped back to expose the wire then either connectors or crimps are fixed to them, there are many types of connectors which are an electro-mechanical device, plug and socket connectors are usually made up of a male plug and a female receptacle. Plugs generally have one or more pins that are inserted into openings in the mating socket. The connection between the two parts must be sufficient to make a good electrical connection and complete the circuit. When the cable harness is complete it is generally continuity tested to ensure the correct pins are connected to the correct wires.

PCB assembly
Electronic contract manufacturing or electronic manufacturing services are terms used for companies that manufacture printed circuit boards, and test and repair pcb's, these companies will often offer other services such as wiring assemblies also known as cable harnesses or cable assemblies, electro-mechanical assembly is also a important part of the electronics industry, often lots of smaller sub-assemblies are assembled that will later all come together in a final finished product
Having the ability for fine intricate work is essential for the printed circuit board assembly process, it is also neccessary to be methodical but to work quickly and efficiently, being a team player is also important. Other skills that you need include attention to detail as this is paramount for quality checks such as pre-production checks on components before they are assembled onto a printed circuit board (PCB), it is generally good practice to get what is known as a first off, this is when a quality check is done on the first printed circuit board (PCB) in a batch so any mistakes are picked up quickly, things an inspector would be looking out for at this stage in the printed circuit board (PCB) assembly process would be the values of resistors, diodes and capacitors inserted with the correct oriantation, intergrated circuits (IC) having pin 1 lined up with silk screen markings on the printed circuit board (PCB)
. After the printed circuit board (PCB) has been soldered more quality checks are carried out on the solder joints, bridging may occur this is when two solder joints join together and a short is created, to rectify this a printed circuit board (PCB) assembler would remove the solder from both joints with a solder sucker then hand solder the joints. Once the printed circuit board (PCB) is complete it is tested this can be done on automatic test equipment (ATE) by an electronic engineer

MATRIX ELECTRONICS
Matrix electronics was an idea that started because of 4 friends that wanted to work together again, we all met back in the 1980's, we worked on the shop floor for one of the biggest electronic companies in warrington and all did our training together, the training at this company was brilliant, we started at the begining learning basic soldering skills then movied onto assembly.
Pre-forming was the first thing to be learned as this is the first stage of PCB assembly, also at this stage the PCB is usually masked off, then we all learned the skills needed to populate a PCB, such as our colour code to be able to identify resistors, we learned that certain components have a cathode and an anode so have to be inserted with the correct orientation, we learned how to inspect a PCB after it had been soldered looking out for dry joints, blow holes and shorts.
Sometimes a PCB would need modifications to bring it up to the latest revision so we learned how to do track cuts and wire links. Once a PCB was complete it would move onto the mechanical section where it would go into the finished product, this was either a plastic or metal box with a front and rear panel, so electro-mechanical assembly skills where also learned, this consisted of crimping and wiring usually switches and transformers, cable assembly skills would also be learned.
We all worked together for over ten years and really enjoyed all aspects of electronic assembly, it was because of our combined knowledge and experience that we decided to start Matrix electronics a PCB assembly and cable assembly sub-contractor for the electronics industry.
