ULTRASONICS

Ultrasonic testing is often performed on steel and other types of metal, other materials can be tested but less successfully. Non-destructive testing is used within many industries that include transporation, automotive, and nuclear.

Ultrasonic testing is useful for monitoring pipework corrosion, as the thickness can be monitored without any effect on equipment or anything sited near-by. A couplant is used to pass a transducer over the area to be inspected and short ultrasonic pulse waves are sent into the test piece.

Some transducers can recieve aswell as send the pulse waves, while some will just send the pulse waves and a seperate reciever will be used. The arrival time of the pulse is used to reveal imperfections or flaws
